I had a random thought; what constitutes the perfect song? I have my own standards and have designated a few for my own personal list.
Currently, I think the following songs are perfect (or as close as possible):
Try a little tenderness- Otis Redding (a little scary; not the Ducky version though)
Please, please, please let me get what I want- The Smiths (depressing but great)
Sexx Laws- Beck (come one, there is fridge/washer love in this video!!)
Its oh so quiet- Bjork (Bjork is awesomely nutty)
Among others...
My criteria are as follows:
A song must be short, infectuous, and make you wish for more when it ends. Please add your own!

Washing of the Water by Peter Gabriel. I'm not a huge fan of his other stuff, but I keep coming back to that song. I have no idea what the song means.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John for its falsetto-y drama
I'm Looking Through You by The Beatles. The only one on my list that meets your "short" criterion.
Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan. I love the alternating voices and how she doesn't get what he's saying until the end and doesn't overreact when it finally becomes clear.

what about full albums..ones that you can listen to all the way through...like you would do with a vinyl album. the peter gabriel reference made me think of this, b/c of his album, "so."
two of my favorites are "beggars banquet," by the rolling stones and "the bends" by radiohead.
Perfect songs to me are the ones that I can wake up to, get my blood pumping, and give me an optimistic outlook on the day.

Song for Winter's Night by Sarah McLaughlin- Beautiful and I figured out some cool harmony to it. I think Gabe heard him 572 times in utero
I don't know any of this music mentioned except Justin's. My favorite song is whatever Justin puts on my iPod. I never bought any cassettes as a kid, and the only CD I've ever purchased in my entire life was Buck Owens--I had to convince myself that I would not go broke from my $10 purchase. Fortunately, I've surrounded myself by friends, roommates, and a husband who are really into music and keep me up on things once in a while.
